How to use Meg’s Journeys or Journeys Live programs to be compliant in Victorian Government Schools

Requirement (as per Languages Education – Roles and Responsibilities)

The primary focus of the classroom teacher is on the planning, preparation and teaching of a language program to achieve specific student outcomes. Purchased online language lessons/courses can only be used to support the classroom teacher to deliver the language program—it is not sufficient that a VIT registered teacher is present or providing onsite supervision during a lesson.

This is how the school is compliant with DE Requirements with the support of Meg Languages (Meg)

REQUIREMENT SCHOOL ACTION WITH MEG
Plan and implement the language program • Dedicated VIT teacher(s) to oversee the program
• Schools works with Meg to coordinate lesson delivery
• VIT teacher(s) attend two mandatory professional learning sessions conducted by Meg, at the start of the program, and in Term 3
Have (or be developing) the content knowledge and pedagogical practice to teach the language Schools VIT Teacher(s):

• Attend annual language training webinars conducted by Meg that are provided in term 2 of each year
• Complete language modules for self paced professional development to hone content and pedagogical practice
• Utilise a myriad of language teaching resources provided by Meg, including lesson plans, key learning concepts, etc.
• Attend meetings with Meg and collaborate on curriculum implementation

Monitor, evaluate and report on student language learning progress School administrators and VIT Teacher(s):

• Utilise Journeys (LMS) to track students’ participation in classroom activities, analysing their performance on assignments and tests
• Report on students’ language learning progress through formative and summative assessments provided by Meg
• Generate detailed progress reports via Journeys to communicate students’ development to parents and administrators

Implement strategies to achieve student learning outcomes. VIT Teacher(s) and Meg Languages teachers:

• Utilise dashboards and leverage the Journeys platform for student work. Dashboards offer a real-time, visual representation of student progress, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement
• Analyse this data and tailor instruction to meet individual needs, direct students to additional resources, and assign targeted exercises that align with their learning goals
• Utilise Journeys as a repository for student work, assignments, feedback, and learning materials. This integration of technology facilitates personalised learning paths, encourages student engagement, and ensures a continuous cycle of assessment and improvement, which ultimately leads to the achievement of desired learning outcomes

Generative Artificial Intelligence

On 1 December 2023, Education Minister released the Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence in Schools.

Meg Journeys uses generative artificial intelligence for its chatbot—Ziggy—and the below demonstrates how Journeys aligns with the framework.

SCHOOLS MUST: MEG JOURNEYS ALIGNMENT
obtain opt-in consent from parents and carers before using any generative AI tool that requires personal information beyond provision of a student’s school email address and creation of a password for registration. Ziggy does not require personal information so does not require opt-in consent.
protect student data and privacy by restricting the uploading of personally identifiable information into generative AI tools or software that integrates generative AI tools. Any voice data (for speaking practice) uploaded onto Ziggy is made anonymous and then deleted right after its use. All other uploading of personally identifiable data is restricted.
comply with any terms set out by the provider of the tool. As part of onboarding, Meg trains school staff members on the proper use of its generative AI tools.

SCHOOLS MUST DIRECT STAFF AND STUDENTS TO NOT USE GENERATIVE AI TOOLS TO: MEG JOURNEYS ALIGNMENT
upload or generate media depictions of students, staff or parents. As part of onboarding, Meg trains school staff members on the proper use of its generative AI tools, including not generating media depictions of students, staff or parents.
generate artefacts that mimic a cultural tradition in a way that is disrespectful or offensive. As part of onboarding, Meg trains school staff members on the proper use of its generative AI tools, including not generating artefacts that mimic a cultural tradition in a way that is disrespectful or offensive.

SCHOOLS MUST ALSO DIRECT STAFF TO: MEG JOURNEYS ALIGNMENT
not use generative AI tools to communicate with students and parents in ways that undermine authentic learning relationships or replace the unique voice and professional judgement of teachers and school leaders. As part of onboarding, Meg trains school staff members on the proper use of its generative AI tools. Our AI tool does not undermine authentic learning relationships or replace unique voice and professional judgement of teachers and school leaders, but is instead used as a supplement in order to support learning in the classroom.
